What Makes Sunflowers So Special?

Sunflowers are fascinating plants beloved around the world. They are the proud national flower of Ukraine (known there as sunyashniki), of course - but did you know sunflowers are also culturally significant in Greece, China, and among many Indigenous peoples in North America? And for those of us who grew up in the countryside, sunflowers bring back fond memories of summertime.

Fun fact: what we often call the sunflower’s “flower” is actually a “flower head," meaning a structure made up of numerous individual flowers called florets. The dark centre is made up of tiny, five-petalled florets, while the beautiful yellow outer ring that looks like petals is actually called “ray flowers”! Wild sunflower plants can have multiple flower heads per stem, but the domestic sunflowers we use in our flower arrangements usually feature a single, large flower head.

Sunflowers are known for tracking the sun across the sky throughout the day. But did you know only the immature, growing flower buds do this? Once sunflowers mature, they stop moving and point in a fixed direction, usually east to greet the morning sun.

How to Care for Cut Sunflowers

If you want to know exactly how to care for cut sunflowers, just follow these simple steps.

  • Choose a tall, sturdy vase that can support the heavy weight of the sunflower heads.
  • Before adding water, wash the vase thoroughly with hot, soapy water (or a diluted bleach solution) to remove any lingering bacteria.
  • Fill the vase two-thirds of the way with room-temperature water.
  • Remove any leaves that sit below the water line to prevent rot.
  • Every other day, empty the vase, add fresh water, and flower food, and trim a small amount off the bottom of the stems at a 45-degree angle.
  • It sounds ironic, but after cutting, sunflowers don't enjoy the sunlight nearly as much as they did when planted in the field! Make sure your vase is not exposed to direct sunlight, heat vents, or cool drafts.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sunflowers

How long do sunflowers last in a vase?

With proper care, cut sunflowers can easily last a week or longer.

What other flowers look like sunflowers?

Yes! If you love sunflowers but can’t seem to find them, we highly recommend yellow gerbera daisies, black-eyed Susans, yellow mums, yellow coneflowers, or marigolds. They all share that bright, cheerful shape and colour.

When are sunflowers in season? Can I buy sunflowers all year round?

Sunflower season usually runs from mid-summer to early fall. Depending on the location, we may be able to source stunning greenhouse-grown sunflowers for your special occasions year-round. Call your local florist to find out.

Are sunflowers poisonous to touch or eat?

No! Sunflowers are not toxic to humans or pets. Of course, you still shouldn’t eat sunflowers that come in a flower arrangement, as they might have been treated with pest control products that you shouldn’t eat.
