Weddings - Hydrangeas are a staple in bridal bouquets and wedding centrepieces because their lush, round blooms photograph well from every angle.

Apologies & Thinking of You - A serene blue hydrangea arrangement can speak volumes when the right words are hard to find.

Birthdays - Send a vibrant mixed-colour hydrangea arrangement to bring instant joy to whoever’s celebrating their big birthday.

Note: Hydrangeas are toxic to both dogs and cats. If you are sending flowers to someone with pets, recommend keeping the arrangement out of reach.

What Do Hydrangeas Symbolize?

If you’re asking what hydrangeas mean or symbolize, the answer really depends on who you ask. In Japanese folklore, hydrangeas were associated with heartfelt emotions, gratitude, and apologies. In the Victorian language of flowers, hydrangeas were tied to vanity due to their showy size. Today, the meaning leans more toward the Japanese take on hydrangeas. Sending hydrangeas often symbolizes abundance, resilience, gratitude, and generosity.

Many people also associate hydrangea colours with specific meanings:

  • Pink hydrangeas are associated with love and sincere emotions, and are tied to the phrase, “You are the beat of my heart” in many Asian countries.
  • Blue hydrangeas traditionally mean forgiveness and apology. Purple hydrangeas symbolize wealth, royalty, and abundance.
  • White hydrangeas, like many white flowers, are seen to symbolize purity and grace.
  • Green hydrangeas, with their almost foliage-like petals, represent renewal, good fortune, health, and prosperity!

How to Care for Cut Hydrangeas

Unlike many flowers, hydrangeas actually absorb water through both their stems and their petals. They love water and need a lot of it! Here is how to keep your hydrangea flower arrangement happy.

  • Before adding water, wash the vase thoroughly with hot, soapy water (or a diluted bleach solution) to remove any lingering bacteria.
  • Fill the vase two-thirds of the way with lukewarm water.
  • Remove any leaves that sit below the water line to prevent rot.
  • Every other day, empty the vase, add fresh water, and flower food, and trim a small amount off the bottom of the stems at a 45-degree angle.
  • If hydrangeas start to droop or wilt, you can revive them by soaking them upside down in water: fill a clean sink with cool water and submerge the flower heads upside down for 20 to 30 minutes. This often helps the hydrangeas perk up within a few hours.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hydrangeas

How long do hydrangeas last in a vase?

With proper care, cut hydrangeas can easily last a week or longer.

When are hydrangeas in season? Can I buy hydrangeas all year round?

While they bloom naturally in gardens from spring through fall, we can source stunning greenhouse-grown hydrangeas for your special occasions year-round.

Are hydrangeas an expensive wedding flower?

You’ll be happy to hear that hydrangeas are one of the more affordable wedding flowers! Since every single stem has a large bloom head (spanning 6 to 12 inches), you don’t need a ton of hydrangeas to make a big visual impact. In other words, they give you a big “bang for your buck.”

How many hydrangea stems do I need for a centrepiece?

Because hydrangeas are big and full, you don’t need many to fill out a centrepiece. Often, just 3 to 5 stems are enough to create a breathtaking hydrangea centrepiece.

What flowers go well with hydrangeas in an arrangement?

Hydrangeas pair beautifully with roses, mums, carnations, and lilies of all kinds. They look their best with a generous helping of greenery.
